Saddam and the CIA
Saddam was considered a great asset to the CIA in its “war against communism”. Always the omnisant bug-a-boo communism to keep the CIA active world wide. It's ridiculous for Americans to create such a monster out of socialism and communism and to continue in this direction persistantly while, at the same time, propping up cruel dictators, aligning with monarchies and destroying democracies. This continued fear mongering of the American people has created a near psychotic nation.
Nevertheless, the US Intelligence services used Saddam as an asset and a tool for over 40 years. US inteleligence helped Saddam's Ba'ath Party and had Saddam on the CIA payroll as early as 1959. This is the time when Saddam failed in an assassination attempt of the Iraqi Prime Minister General Abd al-Karim Quassem. The driver was killed by Saddam but the General only wounded. Nevertheless, with CIA help Saddam's Ba'ath Party took the election of 1963.
General Quassem had taken power in 1958 when he overthrew the Iraqi monarchy in a bloody coup. In the mid-50s Iraq was though of by both Britain and America as a strategic position in the Cold War against the former Soviet Union. This was the time of the monarchy of Iraq which had joined the anti-Soviet Baghdad Pact.
Prime Minister Quassem became an enemy of the US when he withdrew Iraq from the pact in 1959. Quassem's fatal error was the purchase of arms from the Soviet Union. So much for sovereign freedom. The then CIA director Dulles claimed publicly that Iraq was the “most dangerous spot in the world”. Gosh, where have we heard that before? Talk about paranoia!
The CIA then aligned itself with the very authoritarian Ba'ath Party which they had decided was anti-communist. Saddam, while in his early 20s, became part of the CIA plot to kill Prime Minister Quassem. Saddam was set up in an apartment in Baghdad across from Quassem's office in the Iraq Ministry of Defense. Saddam's duty was to follow Quassem's movements.
At this point in time Saddam was a CIA asset whose handler was an Iraqi dentist working, also, for the CIA and Egyptian Intelligence. This information was stated by a Middle East expert Adel Darwish and confirmed by separate American officials.
Darwish has also stated that Saddam was paid and his apartment paid by the assistant military attache at thr Egyptian Embassy in Baghdad. This, too, has been confirmed by separste US officials.
To make a long story short the assassination attempt failed gloriously because the then 22 year old Saddam began firing too soon and killed the driver but only wounded PM General Quassem. It is interesting that the CIA handlers would use such a young, inexperianced thug such as was Saddam to take on the duties of a paid assassin.
Yes Saddam, at the time was considered a thug and a cutthroat on the streets of Baghdad. Even so Saddam made frequent visits to the American Embassy where CIA specialists Miles Copeland and CIA Station Chief Jim Eickelberger were in residence and knew Saddam.
In 1963 PM General Quassem was killed in a Ba'ath Party coup. It remains unknown if the coup was sanctioned by President Kennedy and the CIA. Any influence in this coup has been flatly denied by the CIA with full knowledge, of course, that they would not be believed but that they could rely upon plausible deniability. A phrase that will pop up often in the first President Bush's reign in Washington.
However, the Ba'athist coup was extremely violent and lists of so-called communists, said to have been created by the CIA, led to more than 5,000 citizens being killed in house to house searches. This type of horror went on in Iraq, instilling a morbid fear into the citizenry, for a year and it seems that the deadly hand of American Intelegence was strongly behind these events. These events are eirily reminiscent of events in Chile, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Argentina, Panama etc. Pretty much anywhere that the US was/is influencing quite visciously who they want in charge of each of these countries.
And, the American killing of innocent civilians is continuing today with house to house searches much like those that had taken place in Amsterdam by the Nizis hunting Jews. What horrors the Americans are imitating!
Later, Saddam became the head of al-Jihaz a-Khas which was the intelligence of the Ba'ath Party. After a few years Saddam became propped up as the dictatorial leader of the Ba'ath Party. The CIA relationship with Saddam once again intensified leading up to the Iraq/Iran war in the 1980s.
In addition to my previous article about American aid in the Invasion of Iran by the Iraqi forces here is more evidence of the intrique behind the conflict.
Now it has been admitted that the CIA and DIA (Defense Intelligence Agency) regularly provided Saddam with battlefield information gotten with Saudi AWACS surveillance aircraft. The former DIA official that provided the above information claimed he personally signed off on a document that shared US Spy satellite information with both Iraq and Iran to attempt to gain a military 'Mexican Standoff'' in the region.
Well, the war did become a long one with no clear winner except purhaps the Iranians who lost no territory to Iraq. Unfortunately Saddam did use poison gas and did kill 3,000 Iranian troops outright with troop movements coordinated by American technological information. Saddam also gasses the rebellious Kurds in the north east of Iraq.
The US claims that Saddam created the poisoness gas he used in the war, as well as the delivery systems, but this is not readily apparent. There have been suggestion floating around that Iraq was not technologically advanced enough to do this on its own. Therefore, it has been hinted that the gas and delivery systems came directly from the states or the knowledge and know-how on building such illegal weapons came from the US. It really does seem implausible that Iraq build its own gas weapons. Iraq is not know for creating and building WMD. At any rate the US, having military advisors on the ground and supplying information from their spy satellites must be complicit not only in Saddam's invasion of Iran but also in the use of gas at least two times. The finding of aged poisonous gas in warehoused and its depleted potential over time shows that the US did know of WMD but forgot that time and lack of proper storage would make these poisons useless and could, no longer, be considered as WMD.
It also becomes evident that Saddam's Iraq had not the least idea on how to preserve the quality of said gases nor the ability to create these gases nor on how to create delivery systems. It is only logical to assume someone else's technology produced the killing gasses and someone else provided the delivery systems.
The Saddam/American coziness is said to have come to an end with Iraq's invasion of Kuwait on August 2, 1990. However, it seems more likely that President Bush the first had basically ended things in his own mind much earlier. Remember, that Saddam had asked twice on the international stage for international attention to Iraq's accussation that oil companies in Kuwait were slant drilling into Iraq's oil reserves.
Internationally no action was taken to help negotiate between the two countries a reasonable assessment of the situation. President Bush I indicated to Saddan to take care of his own problems. So, when Saddam took care of his own problems and invaded Kuwait to put an end to the oil theft President Bush I immediately went to war on Iraq.
This is about the same time that false stories were created to create an image of Iraqis as horrid monsters. Once highly rated false story was the fabricated story of Iraqis soldiers taking new born babies fron their bassinettes in hospitals and putting them upon the floor. This falsehood, another American president's lie enraged the American population tremendously and a 'just war' was on every American's mind.
Still, today, Americans are so very quick to get behind a false story and their unique belief that Americans are the moral heavy weights of the world are always ready to attack someone else. The American population sits proudly on the cusp of going to war at all times. It is a sad state of affairs.
The bottom line of the CIA's intrigue in Iraq with Saddam and the Ba'ath Party is their cupability for the murder of many thousands of innocents who may or probably weren't communist. This killing was basically a CIA/DIA/Ba'ath pogrom.
A top military officer in western Iraq has told of a prison in downtown Fallujah that is so overcrowded and dirty that it does not even meet basic minimal standards for humans.
Totten, an independent journalist, said the prison can house a maximum of 110 prisoners but he discovered that there were more then 900 crammed into the facility. U.S. contractors built the prison in 2005 which is located next to the U.S. Joint Communications Center.
