Was Obama a Bit of a Con
I'm not referring to the bailouts here though I do agree, categorically, that corporate welfare is not something I consider relevant in a capitalistic country.
No, I'm focusing more on the essence of America and Americans as subjects ruled by our Constitution. I believe that priority one is to begin the repair of our broken Constitution with which former President Bush and friends left us to contend. I find that it is interesting to note that GW Bush claimed, “The Constitution is just a piece of paper.” This statement has me wondering what type of patriot the former president was!
It does seem that Bush's activities blinding the Constitution, while at war is not, a new concept. The following are a few somewhat fascist examples:
The Alien and Sedition Acts of 1798 (fighting an undeclared war with France)
Lincoln's suspension of Habeas Corpus (suspended during the Civil War & Reconstruction)
In WW l free speech was suspended.
WW II the internment of Japanese-Americans
1950s McCarthyism turned the nation into a witch hunt.(Cold War)
Vietnam – war protesters were wire tapped
George W Bush initiated another era of over reacting with his suppression of Constitutional rights along with his never ending War On Terror! GW claimed the power to imprison Americans he determined to be our enemies without:
obtaining a warrant
letting the arrested hear the charges upon which they were arrested.
And circumvented other safeguards preventing wrongful punishment.
The Bush Administration led the government to participate in cruel punishment and torture of prisoners. When the Congress moved to legislate a ban on these types of treatments Bush said he would interpret the law his way. This does make Bush seem the fascist and that he cared naught about the American rule of law.
Even though, in school, we learn that the Constitution represents the core laws of this nation Bush ordered a clandestine program of electronic surveillance of Americans with no court dignified warrants.
The big problem is how the Bush Administration tore apart the Constitution's separation between the Presidency and Congress giving a far greater reign of power to the President himself. Bush joked about being a dictator, but it was a joke inbred with reality.
The question today becomes, “Is President Obama ready to give back to Americans the true separation of power between the president and that of the Congress to allow that both offices must deliberate together upon what is right or wrong to do for the country. Now might be too early to tell how Obama will deal with Bush`s destruction of Constitutional law and the giving the office of the president overwhelming power to do as he wishes.
It has become apparent that Obama is not going to have the Attorney General`s office take the Bush Administration to task over the Constitutional crimes they have committed. Yes, it truly seems that the rule of law is much less an obstacle for the elite than it is for the increasing homeless filling our dark alleys. RC
